What are the Most Popular Games on Steam in 2014 vs Now
I was sitting down in the cafeteria talking to some friends and I got in an argument with them about something that is so trivial that it wouldn’t even seem worth arguing about. Are the same games the most popular today as they were in 2016?
But as I looked at this question more and more I realized there was actually something there. The answer to it wouldn’t just tell me what people like at the moment it would tell me if people had changed. Or if gamers pick certain great games and stick with them even though newer games outdated them.
Now I had to find the answer, so I headed over to some sites on the huge web of files.
This site was very helpful for the 2014 information.
From this I found all the answers for 2014
Then after that It wasn’t too hard to look at the most popular games on steam in 2016. I did this by looking at the most sold and played of recent time.
1.Dota 2 377,8401,291,328486,158,738
2.Counter-Strike: Global Offensive 321,418737,599272,630,265
3.Team Fortress 249,45083,42537,960,187
4.Fallout 4 35,45257,10220,547,104
5.Tom Clancy's The Division 35,315113,87734,549,681
6.Sid Meier's Civilization V 34,45965,45326,691,252
7.ARK: Survival Evolved 34,31563,06925,745,847
8.Garry's Mod 33,65958,18322,245,127
9.Stardew Valley 30,83364,25624,797,161
10.Tree of Savior (English Ver.) 27,38934,581525,174
Now let’s take a look at these side by side to figure out what the main thing that is happening here is.
What is crazy is that the most popular game is still the most popular. The reason for this is because of how many users bought it.
In fact there are a lot of games that are still on the top from 2014. Sure there are newer games like fallout 4 that will replace some of the old games on the chart but there a a good chunk of the old games still being bought and played by countless of millions of people.
Why is this? Well, maybe gamers as myself don't want new games that are different. Maybe, we like sticking to some of the greater hits that have been released to the world. If this is true than company's can make way more money off of a game project than by making a new one. This can be done by updating the last game, modding it, or even adding new assets. If there is a hit game the best option for that company is to update their game to keep the audience and even grow it.
This is just an idea I have come across from a little research that I did for fun so please don't go disliking this. The point of this was mearly to get my audience thinking about this so that if any one ever made a game there would be ideas to base your descisions off of. This of course is talking about wether you will move on from your last game or you will stick with it and continue to update.
Thank you for reading. As always I will be back with more next week.
